A special CBI court in Ahmedabad may begin trial against alleged gangster-turned-terrorist Aftab Ansari on Thursday in connection with a 2001 case of Patan where a huge consignment of arms was recovered by the CBI.

A special CBI court in Ahmedabad may begin trial against alleged gangster-turned-terrorist Aftab Ansari on Thursday in connection with a 2001 case of Patan where a huge consignment of arms was recovered by the CBI.

Ansari, the mastermind of 2002 attack on American Centre in Kolkata who has been brought to Gujarat from Kolkata, was produced before the court of Special CBI judge R M Parmar on Wednesday.

After being produced before the court,Ansari orally proposed the court for a plea bargain. But this was rejected by the court saying he could not get benefit of plea bargain in such a case.

According to public prosecutor in the case R S Meena, the CBI had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Patan in 2001. The consignment included two AK 56 rifles, live cartridges, two pistols, two magazines,10 detonators, timer device,14 kg RDX and 4 kg of other explosive material.

“Following the recovery, the CBI had registered a case against three persons, including Ansari. The other two accused,Azam Chima and one Akhtar, are still absconding. The accused are facing various charges under the Indian Penal Code,Arms Act and Explosive Substance Act,” said Meena, adding that the court is likely to frame charges against Ansari on Thursday.
