Civil Supplies Department takes stock of displaced families, ration cards at the rehabilitation site in Piplag

Following The Indian Express expose of the ration card muddle at Piplag area in Ahmedabad, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has began an extensive survey in the area to identify the ‘real’ BPL families and is checking the rations cards issued in the area.

The department has also decided to start a public distribution system (PDS) store at Piplag.

This newspaper had earlier reported that many families displaced for development works and rehabilitated in Piplag were given the Above Poverty Line (APL) cards instead of BPL cards.

Deputy Controller,Food and Civil Supplies Department F L Gulchar told The Indian Express,“Our team of inspectors has undertaken the survey and has been speaking to the affected families. We are keen to start a PDS store at the rehabilitation site so that people don’t need to go to distant stores.”

The inspectors who surveyed the area said the people were in “absolute” need of a ration store at the site as the nearest PDS store is around 25 kilometres from the area that has 2,500 to 3,000 people.

The officials took details of the families in the categories of BPL,APL and Antyodaya, especially those who were handed over APL cards.

An official from the survey team said: “We are also collecting copies of old ration cards. We will change their old addresses in the cards and put the new ones. They will also get a new stamp on their card, which will enable them to buy things from the new PDA store. Moreover, the poverty status will also be corrected in the cards.”

The Food and Civil Supplies Department has also taken cognisance of a number of ration cards that were not issued to these families. The department has decided to issue them temporary ration cards, called T-Cards.

The officials said they will ensure that the new PDS store at Piplag starts functioning from January.
