After Mahuva MLA Kanu Kalsariya,who supported the agitation against land acquisition for a cement plant,Una BJP legislator has extended his backing to the stir against renewal or extension of a lease of salt unit.

Around 10,000 farmers from several villages took part in a meet organised at Kob village in Una taluka of Junagadh on Thursday.

The agitating farmers vowed to give a joint fight against any move for renewal of a lease for a salt unit run by the Gujarat Heavy Chemicals Limited (GHCL).

On October 10,clashes were reported from the outskirts of Chikhali village over the issue.

K C Rathod,BJP legislator from Una,said: “I am aware of the problems faced by the farmers because of this salt unit and I will present the farmers’ views before the high ups in the state government.”

Narsinhbhai Dobariya,another BJP leader,said,“This is our joint fight and we will win.”

According to sources,the company’s lease period of 20 years has expired and now the farmers in the area are opposing the functioning of the salt unit.

According to farmers,in the last 20 years,they had to suffer a lot because of the salt unit.

“The unit has damaged the agriculture land in the area and disturbed the sweet water sources. The farmers are unable to cultivate crops and survival of the livestock is in danger,said a farmer leader.
