THREE DAYS after catching a trolley of Lion Services Limited loaded with debris being dumped on forest land, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), UT, Santosh Kumar, on Tuesday shot off a letter to the Municipal Corporation Commissioner Jitender Yadav, demanding stern action against the company. Kumar also sought a calculation of the money saved by Lion after throwing garbage on the forest land instead of dumping it at the garbage processing plant at Dadumajra. Also, the company has to pay tipping charges to the processing plant according to the garbage and debris thrown by it into the plant.

“The Lion Services was indulging in the practice of throwing garbage and debris on the forest land for a long time and saving money with this practice. Earlier, also, forest employees attempted to catch the company employees but they had threatened the forest guard. Later, we caught them and handed them over to the police. I wrote a letter to MC Commissioner to look into this matter,” said Kumar.

Sources said the forest department has also decided to take up the matter with the police, who released the tractor-trolley of Lion without taking any legal action. The tractor-trolley, along with the company’s driver, was caught from the forest area near Sector 47 and taken to Sector 31 police station on the morning of October 28. The police had merely lodged a DDR and released it while MC officials slapped a fine of Rs 5,500 on the company.

The issue of littering and a fine of Rs 5,500 against Lion Services has already divided the councillors, especially of the ruling BJP, and become a hot topic among the representatives of different wards. The MC commissioner was not available for comment despite repeated attempts. Lion Services was assigned the job of keeping roads of sectors situated in the southern division of Chandigarh clean.

The representatives of Lion Services, including Sudha Chakrapani, Director, Strategic Planning, from Dehli are scheduled to arrive in Chandigarh to look into the matter in one or two days.
