Cutting the central assistance,a plan outlay of Rs 1,192 crore was allocated to Delhi Government in the Union Budget which is Rs 36 crore less than last year’s Rs 1,228 crore.
The city government has also been given another allocation of Rs 568 crore as against last year’s Rs 590 crore to meet its non-plan expenditure.
Out of the total allocation,the city got Rs 900 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission while Rs 252 crore has been given as normal assistance to the city government. The normal assistance to Delhi was Rs 229.72 crore in the 2010-11.
Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has given a fund of Rs 500 crore to the city to improve its urban infrastructure and governance besides an allocation of Rs 390 crore for improving basic services to the urban poor.
In the budget,Mukherjee also proposed an allocation of Rs 10 crore for building houses for the economically weaker sections under Rajiv Awas Yojna while a separate allocation of Rs 37.09 crore has been made under assistance for National Social Assistance Programme.
A separate allocation of Rs 53.01 crore was made to NCR under Urban Development Ministry for improving urban infrastructure in the city.
When contacted,a senior official in Delhi Government said allocation was on the expected lines as more money was given to the city in the last three budgets in view of the Commonwealth Games.
The city government has been facing financial difficulties due to an estimated spending of over Rs 16,000 crore in infrastructure development in the run-up to last year’s Commonwealth Games.
The economic slowdown had a severe impact on finances of the city government in 2009-10 with a fall of over Rs 1,300 crore in tax collection being reported in last fiscal.
The financial situation has improved in the last few months due to healthy tax collection in current financial year.
The government collected Rs 1,103 crore as excise tax between April one and November 4 against its collection of Rs 878.44 crore in the same period last fiscal,officials said.
Similarly the government collected a total of Rs 115.81 crore from registration fees during April,2010 to January,2011 against Rs 1.10 crore in the corresponding period of 2009-10.
