New NanoGenx set to rock the Indian market.
Tata Motors has launched the much anticipated, second-generation of the Nano with a price tag, ranging from between Rs 1.99 lakh from Rs 2.89 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. Christened as the Tata Nano GenX, the new model is more of a up-market version of the country’s ‘most-affordable car’ that now comes with the convenience of an AMT (automated manual transmission) along with the revised exteriors and interiors.
With the launch of the GenX model, Tata Motors wishes the Nano to break away from the ‘cheap car’ image associated with it since its inception. The new model is designed around a project called ‘smart city car’ and, as a result, the Nano GenX will now be pitched against entry-level cars like the Alto, Eon etc., in the Indian market.
Updates on the new Tata Nano are largely functional and the changes incorporated are based on customer requirements and owners feedback. While Tata Motors has enhanced the aesthetics and interior design of the new model, the major upgrade comes in the form of a newly introduced AMT (Easy Shift) version along with an openable tailgate feature. The addition of an AMT makes the Tata Nano the most affordable automatic car in the country. Also, the AMT gearbox on the new Nano is the same 5-speed AMT that is found in the Tata Zest diesel AMT version.

The engine in the Tata Nano remains unchanged from the outgoing model. It’s the same 624cc, two-cylinder petrol unit that is good enough for a maximum power output of 38PS and a peak torque of 51Nm. According to Tata Motors, the engine now offers improved driveability and performance. Also, apart from the AMT-equipped version, the new Nano continues to be offered in a 4-speed manual version like before. The ARAI certified mileage for the AMT and manual variants of the car are 21.9km/l and 25.3km/l, respectively.
Other noticeable updates on the new model include new smoked headlamps, a new front face featuring a ‘smiley’ grille, an openable boot and new design wheels. The boot, which is usable now, offers a luggage space of up to 110-litres in manual and 94 litres in AMT versions. The Tata Nano GenX also comes with a larger fuel tank of 24 litres in comparison to the previous model’s 15-litres of fuel capacity.
On the inside, the interior design has been revamped with a new and refreshing look. It features several up-market features such as a 4-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, front power windows and a new Zest-inspired steering wheel (without steering mounted controls).
The Tata Nano GenX is available in five model variants. The prices (ex-showroom, Delhi) are as follows:
Nano GenX XE – Rs 1.99 lakh
Nano GenX XM – Rs 2.29 lakh
Nano GenX XT – Rs 2.49 lakh
