Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) working president and Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava Tuesday announced his candidature from the Bharuch constituency for the Lok Sabha 2024 polls. However, AAP Gujarat President Isudan Gadhvi termed Chaitar’s announcement a “premature statement”.

Bharuch is a general Lok Sabha seat but, owing to its sizable tribal population, has been electing Mansukh Vasava, a tribal leader from the BJP, for the past six terms.

Chaitar’s announcement comes a day after Gujarat AAP chief Isudan Gadhvi announced that the party would enter into a seat-sharing agreement with the Congress in the state in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. The Congress, however, appeared non-committal to Gadhvi’s announcement saying that the decision would finally rest with the Congress central leadership.

Chaitar said that his party was looking at a seat-sharing alliance with the Congress in six seats where the AAP was the runner up in the Gujarat 2022 elections. “The AAP is looking to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha from Bharuch, Bardoli, Valsad, Dahod, Chhota Udepur and Junagadh constituencies… I am preparing for my own candidature from Bharuch constituency. AAP national convenor (Arvind Kejriwal) has already given me a go-ahead and the entire leadership of Gujarat is working together for this,” he said.

He added that the INDIA alliance is going strong. “They have held two meetings in Patna and Bengaluru and in the coming days, there will be more meetings… We are happy and in agreement that we must unite with the Opposition to fight the tyrannical ruling party. The effects of this national coalition will also be seen in Gujarat as AAP will unite with Congress to fight the BJP,” the first-time MLA said.

AAP Gujarat President Isudan Gadhvi told The Indian Express the state unit is looking at the Congress and AAP aligning for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls as a part of the INDIA coalition nationally. “It is in a primary stage and we have to measure our strengths and weaknesses before deciding on seat-sharing. We will prepare a list and send it to AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who will take a final call on the seat-sharing. Chaitar Vasava’s statement is premature but he may be aspiring to contest the polls,” Gadhvi said.
