Shimala, Jan 27 (ANI): Jaundice has started assuming epidemic proportions in Himachal Pradesh with over 4,000 cases been reported so far. The civic authorities suspected that mixing of sewage with the potable water is the reason behind the epidemic. In Shimla sewerage water has been mixed with the potable water due to which the jaundice outbreak has taken place and many have been affected. Effluents from a sewerage treatment plant located in the vicinity of the Ashwani Khud drinking water scheme, which caters to nearly one-third of Shimla’s population, led to water contamination. Scores of residents took precautionary measures and thronged hospitals to get their blood samples checked. State Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who reviewed steps taken by his government to tackle the jaundice outbreak, said many officers had been suspended for their negligence. The jaundice that we see today actually started two months ago. After that we have investigated the matter. We have suspended the officers. We are also arresting many of those contractors who were responsible for taking care of and keeping the water plant clean. Singh added a probe was on to ascertain the matter.
