The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), which has introduced several measures to ensure clean and safe water for its citizens in light of the recent Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in the city, is also looking at the poor sewage disposal in an area where GBS cases were reported.

“It has been noticed that a few residential localities in Nandoshi are releasing sewage in the open…where the water supply lines lie. This is a serious concern so the civic administration has decided to lay a drainage line in the area so as to carry the sewage through the civic network for scientific disposal,” Rajendra Bhosale, Municipal Commissioner, said.

Nandoshi is one of the areas that reported GBS cases along with Nanded, Kirkatwadi, and Khadakwasla. Bhosale said a Rs 1 crore project to lay a drainage line in Nandoshi has been taken up on a war footing.

The civic body has also started replacing water pipes in certain affected areas due to their poor condition and the possibility of contamination due to leakages. Citizens are being provided with chemicals to purify water at home. Water tanks are being cleaned and water is being treated with chlorination.

Bhosale said that the PMC was also pushing for the Centre’s approval to construct a 125 MLD water treatment plant on government land in Vadgaon Budruk.

Efforts are also on to construct a water treatment plant near Khadakwasla dam, he added.
