The TB death rate in Dharmapuri went down from 12.5% to 7.8%, in Karur from 7.1% to 5.3%, and in Villupuram from 6.1% to 5.2%.

There were only 2.3 lakh missing cases in 2023, as compared to 3.2 lakh the year before, the report states. This gap has been reducing over the years, especially with the government’s Ni-kshay portal tracking all TB patients.

According to the report, India recorded 2.8 million (28.2 lakh) TB cases in 2022, with a case fatality ratio of 12 per cent. Officials stated that “The best estimate of the number of deaths in India from TB was 3,42,000 (3,31,000 among HIV-negative people and 11,000 among those with HIV).”

Adjunct therapies like nutritional support can also go a long way in reducing deaths due to TB, Dr Swaminathan added and said that recent research illustrates the positive impact of giving food baskets to patients with TB and their closest contacts.
