The Narendra Modi government is keen not to allow any surge in sugar prices particularly during the peak festival months. It has already banned export since May and is yet to fix any quota for shipments in the new sugar year.

Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has projected the sugar output to increase by 13 per cent to 310 lakh tonnes in the 2020-21 marketing year on likely higher availability of sugarcane as against 274.2 lakh tonnes last year.

The country's sugar output has reached 27.02 million tonnes (MT) so far in the ongoing 2019-20 season (October-September). About 1,50,000 tonnes of sugar production is expected by season-end, taking total output to 27.2 MT for this season, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pawar has called for a one time grant of Rs 650 per tonne of cane crushed for the last two seasons as well as increasing the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar from the present Rs 3,100 per quintal to Rs 3,450-3750/- per quintal.

According to rating agency Icra, the national lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the sugar demand, resulting in a decline in the sugar prices to closer to minimum support price (MSP) levels of Rs 31 per kg from Rs 32.5 per kg in February 2020.
