A statement issued by the NSCN(IM) termed the news about the organization allegedly stopping Rishang Keishing’s last journey to his birthplace as “unauthenticated” and said that “there was neither restrictions imposed from NSCN/GPRN authority for the burial at Bungpa village.”

Though no government or family source revealed why his body was not taken to his native village, former CM and senior Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh told The Indian Express that it was “most unfortunate” that Rishang Keishing’s body was not allowed to be taken to his village.

After Manipur became a full-fledged state in 1972, Keishing returned to state politics, and got elected to the state assembly from Phungyar, an assembly segment which he represented for seven terms till 2002.
