India's petrol consumption rose in July, but diesel demand fell owing to monsoon rains and floods in some parts of the country, preliminary industry data showed on Tuesday.

Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, rose by more than 5% to 4.82 million barrels per day (18.5 million tonnes) in February, its 15th consecutive year-on-year rise, data showed.

Demand took a hit in 2020-21 due to the pandemic, before posting a modest recovery in 2021-22. Demand for most products breached pre-pandemic highs in the current fiscal and is set to rise further in the next one.

Petrol and diesel demand had fallen month-on-month in July. While petrol consumption is almost flat in the first half of August, diesel - the most widely used fuel in the country - saw demand drop 11.2 per cent during August 1-15 to 2.82 million tonnes from 3.17 million tonnes in the same period of the previous month.

The country’s overall demand for petroleum products has fallen as a result of the second Covid surge. Official data released on Wednesday showed that demand for petrol fell 13 per cent in April, while that for diesel dropped 7.5 per cent, compared to the previous month.
