Amongst the several first-time features that stood out at this edition were Nicole Riegel’s Holler, Emma Seligman’s Shiva Baby, and Suzanne Lindon’s Spring Blossom. While different in tone and tenor, the focus of the films is on the young woman who is both at the centre of the narrative, and propels it.

In Violation, one of the most chilling films I’ve seen, we see how simmering trauma between siblings, spouses, and other close family members, can result in pure, unadulterated horror.

Kingsley Ben Adir turns in a wonderful performance, as does Eli Goree, jumping up and down with glee after knocking out his rival, Sonny Liston. The other acts are spot on, too.

What lifts The Ties, which has travelled from the Venice Film Festival to Toronto, is in the way it shows that there is nothing black or white when two people cannot continue living with each other.
