According to available data for the first three quarters in the last six years, 152 ships beached at Alang in 2021-22, 139 in 2020-21, 141 in 2019-20, 170 in 2018-19, 166 in 2017-18, and 195 in 2016-17.

Alang consumes 70-100 tonne of oxygen on a daily basis and most of it is sourced from Shree Ram Group in Bhavnagar, Reliance Industries in Jamnagar and Inox in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Marco Polo is the third cruise vessel to reach Alang in the last 50 days. The first such vessel to arrive for scrapping was "MV Karnika" which could not restart operations after the Covid-19 lockdown in India.

The new authority will not only supervise all ship-breaking activities at Alang, through periodic checks and inspections, but the new arrangement will require the GMB to “report” to the national authority which will include timely submission of audit reports for safety, health and environment.

The vessel had served the Indian Navy for 30 years before being decommissioned. It had served in the UK's Royal Navy as HMS Hermes and named INS Viraat after being inducted in the Indian Navy.

Ship-breakers feel that their counterparts in Bangladesh and Pakistan are able to pay more and the new ship-recycling policy introduced by the Gujarat government in January 2016 has not been able to attract new players to the sector.
