MORE PEOPLE are entering the workforce – and thus creating more income – which was contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country, Prof Emeritus Bhaskar Ramamurthi said on Saturday.
Ramamurthi, a former director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, was addressing students at the 20th convocation of the Dhirubhai Ambani University on Saturday.
“Our birth rates have probably already stabilised, but the lag effect…people who were born 15 years ago. So still there are 23 million of the people, youngsters entering the workforce every year. And that’s going to continue for another maybe eight, 10 years before it starts reducing. So you’re getting more people and less people leaving the workforce because the population is much lower than eight years ago. So when people pass away, the numbers passing away per year are probably half of that. So net-net, there are just more people entering the workforce, so more production is happening,” he said.
Director general of the university Prof Tathagata Bandyopadhyay said that in 2024-25, more than 125 companies, including Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Microsoft, UnifyR, Singla, Miso, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, visited the campus and offered placement opportunities to students.
In a message shared with the students, President of Dhirubhai Ambani University, Tina Anil Ambani said, ‘While you continue to push the envelope in terms of technology-driven innovation, let human-centered design be your differentiator. While chasing your goals, never lose sight of your greatest asset, your health. Physical and mental health underpin every endeavor you embark upon and show you up in times of stress and struggle”.
The university awarded 649 degrees including 295 post graduates.
