Virginia State University shooting: Campus lockdown lifted, one injured

A shooting incident on homecoming weekend triggered a lockdown in Virginia State University on Saturday night. The university police asked people to avoid the the area. “Shooting on Campus – VSU is on lockdown. Avoid the area. Updates to follow,” VSU Police tweeted.

In a second tweet, police said they are still at the scene.

The incident happened at about 8.25 pm local time, the Chesterfield Police Department said in a statement. A man was shot but his injuries are non-life-threatening, they added.

“Police believe this is an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the campus,” Chesterfield Police said.

The university police added that Chesterfield police cleared the scene and the campus lockdown has been lifted.

“Police have cleared the scene. Officers will remain vigilant. Campus lock down has been lifted,” VSU Police tweeted.

Earlier this month, in one of the worst mass shootings in US history, 58 people were killed at a country music festival in Las Vegas.
