Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi Monday announced that he would be travelling to Europe for a “few days”, ostensibly to celebrate the new year. This is the first time that Rahul has made public his foreign travel plans.
“I will be travelling to Europe for a few days. A very Happy New Year to everyone. Hope the new year brings much joy and happiness to you and everyone close to you!,” he tweeted soon after attending a function at the Congress headquarters to mark the party’s 131st Foundation Day.
Neither Rahul nor his party, however, assigned any reason for his visit.

Rahul was out of the country during New Year on some occasions in the past as well. Last year, he even gave the foundation day function a miss. There has been much debate about his foreign travels in the past. While Rahul never spoke about his trips, his party at times gave sketchy details, triggering more speculation.

When Rahul travelled to Aspen last September to attend a conference, the Congress initially did not give out much details, prompting the BJP to suggest that the party has sent its vice-president on a “forced vacation” because “his stay anywhere near Bihar” would have harmed the party as well as the grand alliance’s electoral chances. The Congress was then forced to come out with more details about his engagement abroad.
Similarly, neither the Congress nor Rahul revealed details about his 56-day leave of absence earlier this year.
