Djokovic saved by rain; Federer, Serena, Venus win; Paes, Bopanna advance at Wimbledon on Day 5: As it happened

Federer, Serena, Venus progressed on a rain affected Day 5 at Wimbledon. Del Potro beat Wawrinka. Djokovic remains in trouble against Querrey.

Play was washed out for hours at end at Wimbledon on Day 5, but when it wasn’t raining, the quality of tennis remained exceptionally high. Juan Martin Del Potro returned to Wimbledon after three years and four surgeries to beat Stan Wawrinka. Novak Djokovic went down by two sets to Sam Querrey before rain saved him for a day. Later Roger Federer had no such problems against Dan Evans. In the ladies section, Serena and Venus Williams were taken the distance in their respective matches. For the Indian contingent, Rohan Bopanna – Florin Mergea and Leander Paes – Marcin Matkowski progressed in straight sets.

Venus Williams accused Wimbledon officials of discriminating against its women champions and wants “equality” when it comes to scheduling matches on its two biggest showcourts.

Muguruza stunned by qualifier Jana Cepelova

Second seed Garbine Muguruza, bidding to add the Wimbledon crown to her French Open title, was beaten in the second round on Thursday by Slovakian qualifier Jana Cepelova 6-3 6-2 in the shock of the tournament so far.
