The homecoming

UMA BHARTI’s readmission into the BJP is unlikely to turn around the BJP’s electoral fortunes in UP or benefit the party in any way (‘Bharti’s UP’,IE,June 9). Apart from Nitin Gadkari,no other major BJP leader has expressed any enthusiasm at her return. No top BJP leader was present at the function to welcome her back. The BJP leadership in her home state,Madhya Pradesh, appears at a loss because she is seen as a destabilising factor. She is a gifted speaker but her mercurial temperament and poor administrative skills have dampened that skill.

YOUR editorial ‘More sunlight’ (IE,June 10) is timely. Although we have adopted parliamentary democracy and the cabinet form of government, based on the UK model, can it be said that India matches those standards? When a minister hits the headlines for misdemeanour,he quits the cabinet on his own in the UK. India’s misfortune is that our ministers take the oath of office and then proceed to make their fortunes by foul means. A. Raja and Kanimozhi, among others, are examples.

Only preaching

HOME Minister P. Chidambaram says people’s suggestions to legislators and the government on black money,Lokpal, etc will be considered. Has there been a shortage of suggestions on these subjects? He says debates take place in Parliament and not elsewhere. Will anyone, who has seen TV footage of the last several years of Parliament in action, think that serious debates take place there? When was the budget debated last sector-wise or subject-wise in a civil and informed manner? It’s amusing the Congress is now saying the government can not “outsource” legislation. If that were so,why is there the National Advisory Council?

Out of turn

WHY should each word of Baba Ramdev be put under scrutiny? Though erudite in yoga and Ayurveda,he is not an expert in politics. He should be allowed to have a catharsis among his disciples after the undemocratic suppression of his movement in Delhi. His crusade against corruption is the result of his intense national feeling.

BLACK money is of two types: that from tax evasion on legal earnings and that earned through illegal means. When detected, the defaulter in the first case is required to pay a penalty and can retain the remaining amount. In the second case, the person is to be booked for crime and the money is confiscated. As it seems, all account holders in Liechtenstein’s LGT Bank list have been found to belong to the first category.
