After the success of Tere Bin Laden, Ali Zafar will be seen acting in a romantic comedy under the Yash Raj banner.
As Ali,a Pakistani journalist who tricks an unsuspecting Osama Bin Laden look-alike into starring in a satirical video,Ali Zafar had the audiences in splits with his deft comic touch. As an actor he has all the makings of a Bollywood matinee idol hes good-looking and has a theatre background except for one thing: hes Pakistani, and lead roles in Hindi movies are rare for Pakistani actors. Tere Bin Laden was Zafars debut Bollywood film. The Pakistani actor has now been signed by Yash Raj Films for its next untitled romantic comedy co-starring Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. The singer-turned-actor says,Yes,thats true. I will be seen in a parallel lead. Ill be cast opposite a newcomer, who I believe has not been shortlisted yet. I understand that in Bollywood, actors wait for years to act in a Yash Raj film. I feel really lucky to bag a role in a YRF project just after my first movie. Zafar reportedly landed the role after Aditya Chopra was impressed with his performance in Tere Bin Laden.
He will also lend his voice for the upcoming rom-com. He had sung two songs in Tere Bin Laden Ullu da pattha and I love Amrika with music composers Shankar,Ehsaan and Loy.
It makes sense for the producer to have an actor who can also sing in the film, adding that it will give his fans a chance to see him act and sing in the same movie. I am very passionate about music. And I dont want it to take a backseat. Singing for Bollywood will give me a chance to pursue both my passions; acting and singing, the artiste adds.
Ask him about his stint with Bollywood and the kind of roles he would love to do and a confident Zafar quips,Its not that Im choosy about the roles I get. I prefer doing intelligent cinema. I would also like to work with Govinda and Akshay Kumar. I like their comic timing. I never felt like an outsider and was treated very well during my first film. It did come as a surprise for me that my debut movie did business way beyond the expectations. Tere Bin Laden had six to seven weeks of run in India. Its still playing in a couple of theatres in Delhi. Such kind of success is a big achievement for me, he adds. However, the film was banned in Pakistan as the local authorities felt that its release might have untiward effects.
Speaking about his future plans,Zafar says that he plans to release his music album this year. He will also focus on reading scripts.
The actor has also been actively involved in raising funds for the floods in Pakistan. But once thats done,Zafar will try setting up a pad for himself in India. If I have to go through scripts and seek roles Ill have to spend a lot of time in India.
So will his Pakistani fans support his decision? It shouldnt bother them. Let me put it this way. Ill have two bases; one in Pakistan and the other in India. As long as Im wanted here for work Ill be here.
