Battling charges of sexual harassment, Rajendra K Pachauri has cancelled his travel to Nairobi where he was scheduled to attend a meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Pachauri is the chairman of the IPCC.
“Pachauri has informed the IPCC that he will be unable to chair the plenary session… because of issues demanding his attention in India,” the statement said.
“The IPCC will have no further comment on the issues demanding Dr Pachauri’s attention,” it said.
Pachauri has been accused by a junior associate at the Delhi-based TERI, which he heads, of sexually harassing her. The victim told police she feared Pachauri would run away from law if he was allowed to leave the country.
On Saturday evening, legal rights activist Indira Jaising also expressed similar apprehension at a press conference.
Senior advocate Vrinda Grover, who was also present, claimed that another woman, an ex-employee of TERI who had worked there 10 years ago, has also come out with similar complaints against Pachauri though she had not approached the police yet.
