Tej Pratap Yadav, newly sworn in as Bihar’s health minister, has suggested surprise inspections be carried out on premier government health institutes and medical colleges, government sources said.

Lalu Prasad’s elder son, seen as reticent compared to his visible younger brother Tejaswi, held the first review meeting of his department Tuesday night. Sources present said he suggested a number of moves and showed intent, after having conducted an inspection of Patna Medical College and Hospital the day he took charge.

“Patna Medical College and Hospital is like Patna High Court,” Tej Pratap said, according to officials present at the meeting. “All life-saving drugs should be available at hospitals. I will keep conducting surprise inspections at places such as PMCH, Indira Gandhi Heart Institute, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences to know if my instructions are followed or not.”

He asked the health secretary to keep touts out of government hospitals, expressing concern about complaints of these touts moving around to lure patients to private clinics. He asked senior doctors to make at least two rounds of patients at hospitals. “Take the help of security guards if needed to drive away such touts,” said the minister.

Tej Pratap, who said he had received complaints of lifesaving drugs and other medicines not being available, reportedly told officers, “There should be no reason for patients to move to private hospitals. Senior doctors should also take two rounds of patients’ wards to boost confidence of common people.” He also brought up the mushrooming of nursing homes, saying these should be registered with the government and follow all specifications. He wanted the status of CT scan and MRI machines and ventilators to be reviewed periodically.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who has kept Home, General Administration, Vigilance and Public Relations under himself, has allotted two of his key departments to Lalu’s sons. Apart from giving Health to Tej Pratap, he has given Road Construction to Tejaswi besides making him deputy CM.
