Ranchi: Woman ‘sells’ baby, officials bring him back

On July 12, he was returned to the woman.

A woman from Birhor community, a primitive tribal group, reportedly sold her two-day-old son for Rs 2,000, officials said. The baby has, however, been recovered and returned to her.

According to officials, the woman, a widow aged around 40, lives in Birhor Tola of Basantpur village in Ramgarh district.

Two days after she gave birth to a son on July 8, the infant was sold to a small-time businessman from Chatra district, reportedly for Rs 2,000. On receiving information, officials contacted the man and asked him to return the baby.

On July 12, he was returned to the woman.

Ramgarh SDO Kiran Kumari Pasi said: “We got information about the incident a couple of days ago. The village headman and local administration were pressed into service to ensure that the child was recovered and returned to his mother. The woman is being counselled.”

Mandu BDO Jai Kumar Ram said: “We are trying to ascertain the exact reason behind her decision to sell the child.” No police complaint has been lodged so far.
