J-K: Army jawan, three terrorists killed in separate encounters

An Army jawan was killed after some terrorists made an unsuccessful attempt to infiltrate into the state from across the LoC in Nowshera sector on Monday morning.

An Army jawan was killed after some terrorists made an unsuccessful attempt to infiltrate into the state from across the LoC in Nowshera sector on Monday morning.

“During the early morning hours, an Army patrol was fired upon by terrorists/inimical elements close to the Line of Control in the forward areas of Nowshera Sector (in Rajouri district),” Defence spokesman Lt Colonel Manish Mehta said.

“Our troops retaliated appropriately. In the ensuing firefight one soldier was injured and later attained death while being evacuated to military hospital,” he said.

The deceased has been identified as Sepoy Sudimesh from Kerala.

The terrorists opened fire on the Army patrol party ahead of the border fencing, (which is situated some kilometres away from the LoC), Defence Sources said.

Search operations were still in progress till last reports came in, he said.

Meanwhile, three militants were killed after army and Special Operations Group of J&K police launched an operation at Sulligam in south Kashmir.

Officials said that troops of Rashtriya Rifles and police launched an operation at Sulligam near Ashmuqam on Anantnag – Pahalgam highway. They said that all the three could be local militants who were operating in south Kashmir. Officials said that it was a brief encounter that lasted for half an hour.

The operation against the militants in Kupwara entered second week. So far a commanding officer and a soldier have been killed in the operation that is spread over 25 villages in Kupwara. Officials said that army is looking for a Lashkar group that had recently sneaked into Valley.
