Govt to hold meet to rein in hate messages on social media

Akhilesh Yadav had directed his administration to take action against those “inciting hatred” by circulating “baseless” content on social media, especially Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.

The government is planning a meeting of all stakeholders to ensure that social media platforms actively monitor and remove hate messages and objectionable posts, especially those with communal overtones, sources said on Thursday.

Following the lynching of Mohammed Akhlaq by a mob in Dadri over rumours of beef consumption, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had directed his administration to take action against those “inciting hatred” by circulating “baseless” content on social media, especially Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter.

As per plans being chalked out, representatives of the Ministries of Home, Telecommunication, Intelligence Bureau, NTRO and prominent social media platforms will thrash out a comprehensive strategy to counter the problem.
