Extensive planning by the Delhi Police, which roped in officers of the Special Cell and SWAT commandos, ensured underworld don Chhota Rajan safely reached the CBI headquarters Friday after landing at the Air Force Station in Palam.
Rajan, who was deported from Indonesia, was escorted by officials of the CBI, the Mumbai Police and the Delhi Police Special Cell on the flight, which landed at 4.50 am.

At the airport, a police team escorted a white ambassador car — meant to be a decoy — to the Special Cell office in Lodhi Colony. Meanwhile, another convoy, led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, took Rajan to the CBI headquarters, which has been turned into a virtual fortress with Delhi Police and paramilitary forces standing guard.
The planning was done 48 hours in advance. A total of 60 security personnel from the police, intelligence agencies and paramilitary forces were selected. They were then divided into two teams of 30 each, sources said.
Since Thursday night, mediapersons had set up camp outside Palam Air Force Station in the hope of getting a glimpse of the gangster.
When they saw an ambassador heading to Lodhi Colony, many of them gave chase, only to later realise that they were following the wrong car.
No wireless sets were used during the operation. Rajan did not speak with officers during the 15-minute journey, sources said.
