Cricketer Amit Mishra booked for assaulting female friend, has a week to appear before cops

The Bengaluru police on Tuesday registered a criminal case against cricketer Amit Mishra after one of his female friend alleged that he assaulted and outraged her modesty in a five star hotel on September 25.

A criminal case has been registered against leg-spinner Amit Mishra with the Bengaluru police following complaints filed by a female friend of the cricketer of assault and attempts to outrage her modesty. The 33-year-old Mishra is part of India’s ODI squad and was also named for the first two Tests against South Africa at a selection committee meeting in New Delhi on Monday.

The woman has alleged that she was attacked in a five-star hotel in Bengaluru on September 25 while Mishra was in the city to attend a cricket camp. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central division) Sandeep Patil said the police has served a notice asking Mishra to appear before them within a week for further investigation.

The woman in her complaint claimed she and Mishra were friends for over four years and would often meet each other. On September 25 she entered Mishra’s hotel room when he was not around and this resulted in an altercation when he arrived, the woman told the police. The argument turned violent and Mishra allegedly beat her with a tea kettle.

“Some members of the hotel staff witnessed the incident and we have taken their statements. We have enough evidence to take action against Mishra if he fails to appear before the investigating officer,” DCP Patil said.

He said the police have also emailed the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) about the incident. The case against Mishra has been registered under the Indian Penal Code section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

“The incident took place on September 25 and the woman filed a case on September 27. We have collected the statements of eye witnesses and CCTV footage at the hotel,” an official at the Ashoka Nagar police station said.
