Classic video game Contra to get a movie adaptation and we are super nostalgic. Watch teaser
It appears a movie is going to be made on Contra, 30 years after the first iteration of the game was released in 1987. And due to that longing, and nostalgic feeling, I am excited about it. But what to do about the story? The teaser (embedded) does not really reveal anything.

Japanese entertainment company Konami’s Contra was the only classic video game that could lure our attention away from Super Mario in those misty days of childhood. In our cheap Nintendo knockoffs that were widely available in electronic stores across India, this game was the ‘cool’ thing, while Super Mario, we agreed, were for kids and girls, although we, the boys, loved that too. Of course, then Mortal Kombat came and we forgot everything that had come before. But still, Contra was something special. It gave us the feel of a first-person-shooter without being a first-person game, or, indeed, a proper shooter.
Now, it appears a movie is going to be made on the game, 30 years after the first iteration of the game was released in 1987. And due to that longing, and nostalgic feeling, I am excited about it. But what to do about the story? Contra’s premise can be summed up, basically, like this: two special-forces commandos (both of whom looked like Arnold Schwarzenegger) go to investigate an alien presence in a remote island. How do you make a film on that? Well, I will let you decide.
Here is the official synopsis: “In 1988, a huge meteorite lands on an uninhabited island in the South China Sea. Chen Qiang and Li Zhiyong investigate but come up empty handed. 29 years later, Chen sends commandos Bill and Lance into a combat mission there to neutralize the villainous Red Falcon Organization, but end up facing a different enemy altogether.”
The teaser (embedded) does not reveal anything expect animated logo and the classic Contra tune, so we don’t know how the movie would look like and who would be cast. It is being produced by a Chinese company, so most likely we would see Chinese actors playing the two primary roles. In any case, we will have to wait for a trailer to make up our minds about the movie.
