At Pimple Gurav: Many ‘dangerous’ speed-breakers: some large, some small and some unmarked

Pimple Gurav, a suburb that has seen rapid development in the past 10 years, and which is home to BJP’s Pimpri-Chinchwad unit president Laxman Jagtap, has some of the “most dangerous” speed-breakers, according to residents and civic activists.

There are several speed-breakers, set up by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Pimple Gurav. Though they are marked with white stripes, many of them are “abnormally-shaped”, making the going tough for two-wheeler riders. There are no warning boards indicating the presence of speed-breakers a few metres ahead, and the speed-breakers are not uniformly shaped.

Kiran Dhanavate, a local resident, observed, “It is as if we are participating in a motorcross competition, where you take off after hitting a hill.” “The speed-breakers are abnormal in shape… and risky for those who ride two-wheelers in the night… ,” he added. Even if the rider manages to get away unscathed, the vehicle will be damaged, said Dhanavate.

In congested areas like Sudarshan Nagar, most of the speed-breakers are smaller in size and many of them are unmarked. “On the narrow roads of Sudarshan Nagar, vehicles are parked on both sides, leaving little room for even one vehicle to pass. So why set up scores of speed-breakers,” asked Hrushikesh Marale, a student.

On the Kalpatru Estate Society Road, the first speed-breaker has no white stripes, a mandatory requirement under the law. It is followed by at least four such unmarked speed-breakers. Outside the residence of Laxman Jagtap, one speed-breaker had been practically flattened and the next one is quite a distance away.

Jagtap said he was aware of the problems arising due to the speed-breakers. “We will discuss the issue with PCMC Municipal Commissioner Shravan Hardikar and find out why speed-breakers of different sizes were set up in Pimple Gurav,” he said.
