The Namdhari sect, too, has announced Rs 20 lakh cash prize for those giving any clues about the culprits.

Ten days after Namdhari sect matriarch Chand Kaur was shot dead, the police are still without solid leads in the case. This despite deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal having constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the police having released sketches of two suspects and announced a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh for informers.

Targeting his own government, Mandi board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, who holds cabinet minister rank in the SAD-BJP government, said Thursday, “I have failed to understand why the culprits are not even identified even after 10 days? This is pitiable. An innocent woman was shot dead and police have made no progress in the case. The government should solve this case on priority.”

Lakhowal visited Bhaini Sahib Thursday to condole the death, said “Even I am unsafe in the current scenario.”

“Mata Chand Kaur was a grassroots worker. She just served people throughout her life. So am I. My work is to visit fields and listen to farmers’ woes, solve their issues. I am also a sewadaar. Workers like us are always unsafe. We are always in the field. I am also unsafe. Even today, one of my security guards is absent. Sewadaars like us need proper security arrangements,” said Lakhowal.

Four gunmen and an escort, along with a personal assistant and a permanent driver, are already part of Lakhowal’s security detail.

Lakhowal, who is also the president of farmers’ union Bhartiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal), said he would approach Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal regarding the case. “The police should nab the culprits at the earliest. It is shocking that they have not even identified any suspects yet,” he said.
