Police Tuesday detained BJP MP Yogi Adityanath and his supporters while they were on way to Shohratgarh town in Siddharthnagar district where a communal clash had taken place during Muharram processions last week.

Later, talking to reporters the Gorakhpur MP claimed he and his supporters were stopped by the police, arrested and brought to a guest house at Bansi area. He claimed that he was going to hold a programme against the “killing” of a trader in Shohratgarh in a clash during Muharram processions as police have not lodged any FIR in the matter.

He also claimed that the officials from Itwa police station had entered the house of Shohratgarh town area chairperson, Babita Kushwaha, and assaulted her children.

Contacted, SP Ajay Kumar Sahni said the trader had died after falling from the roof of his house and his family members have already stated that the death occurred in an accident. He said the area was tense as the Shohratgarh market, which had been closed for a few days, was reopening now.

Sahni said Adityanath was stopped as a precautionary measure.

The police officer also said that Babita Kushawha’s husband Subhash is an accused in inciting the violence on Saturday. In order to escape the culpability, his family is claiming that police entered their house and assaulted the children, the SP said.

Adityanath later said will now go to Tulsipur in Balrampur district for another programme. He said the DM and SP have assured him of action in the case of trader’s death.
