Its leaders pelted with eggs, stones on campus, AAP blames NSUI

NSUI on the other hand claimed that the entire episode was staged by CYSS for publicity.

AAP leaders Alka Lamba and Dilip Pandey were allegedly pelted with eggs and stones in Delhi University’s North Campus on Monday, where they had gone to welcome freshers at the start of the new academic session. The AAP student’s wing blamed the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union (NSUI) for the attack.

Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) State President Anupam Yadav said the attack — which happened at a tea stall outside the university’s Arts Faculty — was over within 30 seconds.

“Our leaders were meeting students at the spot when suddenly some people came running from behind and started throwing eggs and stones. Within 30 seconds it was all over but we saw that they were NSUI goons. Three people even got injured,” he said.

NSUI on the other hand claimed that the entire episode was staged by CYSS for publicity.

“They’re pulling these stunts in the hope that they will gain publicity and sympathy from DU students, which is exactly the kind of politics their parent party indulges in. We had absolutely no role to play in the ruckus; it was all staged by their own people,” NSUI National Secretary Vivekanand Pathak said.

ABVP State Secretary Saket Bahuguna condemned the incident but said the AAP leaders should have respected the autonomy of the university.

Lamba and Pandey had gone to Ramjas and Kirori Mal colleges respectively as part of the “CYSS Selfie” campaign with senior party leaders and spokespersons.

Apart from them, several popular faces of the party including Raghav Chadha, Adarsh Shastri and Raghu Ram had visited Miranda House, Hindu College and Sri Venkateswara College respectively to meet and greet freshers.

Lamba, a former DUSU president from NSUI in 1995-996, said, “We were talking to students at the tea stall when suddenly a car stopped. Around four to five people got out and started attacking us. Three of our volunteers got hurt, of which one has fractured his hand. In the tussle to stop them , a car window was also smashed. We immediately called up police. NSUI and ABVP have been violent ever since I was in DU; this is their politics.”
