A 30-year-old man was killed in southwest Delhi’s Dwarka after an Ola cab he had stolen — and was travelling in — allegedly rammed into a truck, police said, adding that a hunt is on to nab his associate, who managed to flee the spot.

The dead has been identified as Ashish Dhanda, police said. “On Saturday night, Ola driver, 34-year-old Chandarpal, was returning home to Dwarka Sector 19 after dropping off a passenger in Gurgaon. Around 11.15 pm, he stopped his Maruti Swift Dzire at the Dwarka Sector 19 traffic signal, when two men on a motorcycle approached him. They asked him to drop one of them to Gurgaon, but he declined,” an officer familiar with the details of the case said.
Chandarpal told police that Dhanda whipped out a knife and threatened him.

“They forced him to get out of the car at knife point. They then beat him up and tried to stab him. He somehow managed to escape from their clutches and approached police,” the officer said. Leaving behind their motorbike, the assailants then got into Chandarpal’s Ola cab and escaped the spot.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that after driving for a kilometre, Dhanda took an U-turn. However, he lost control of the car as it was being driven at a very high speed. Eventually, the car rammed into a truck and overturned. The impact of the collision was such that the car was completely smashed and police had to use gas cutters to take the passengers out of it,” the officer said.

Dhanda, who was taken to a nearby hospital, was declared brought dead. “The doctors informed police that he sustained head, chest and leg injuries. His body has been preserved for post-mortem,” the officer said. Meanwhile, on the basis of Chandarpal’s complaint, a case of robbery was registered.

Police started visiting nearby hospitals to check the details of all the newly admitted patients as they suspected that the other robber too sustained injuries.  “Police also found their motorbike at the spot, and with the help of transport authority, got details of the owner, identified as one Surendra. Investigation so far has revealed that Surendra had left his home three years ago,” the officer said.
