With the onset of summer and an increase in demand for water in the capital, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) is likely to install around 100 water-dispensing machines in public places and major streets in a month’s time, providing free drinking water to residents.
DJB vice-chairman and AAP MLA from Karawal Nagar Kapil Mishra said, “In the next 7-10 days, we are planning to publish expression of interest (EOI) for the project. These water dispensing units will provide free supply of drinking water to people.”
Last summer, following a pilot project in a slum cluster in northwest Delhi, the DJB had installed water ATMs in other parts of the capital, as part of an effort to meet the growing water demands of Delhi residents.

With DJB facing shortage in finances, Mishra maintained that the project will be able to generate enough revenue for providing free drinking water. “We plan to generate revenue by using these water kiosks for advertisements. Since these machines will be set up in public places and major roads in the capital, the amount of revenue generated through advertisements is going to be substantial,” he said.
While the DJB expects these water-dispensing machines to be state-of-the-art, “efficient and smart”, a final design will be approved once proposals from private companies are received. “Our primary aim is to ensure that the international standards in terms of water quality are maintained in these water kiosks,” Mishra said.
The AAP, in its election manifesto, had promised it would work on ensuring residents have access to safe drinking water.
