Youth ‘kills’ self, grandmother by poisoning at Dera Bassi home

Varun worked as a marketing executive for a private towel manufacturing company, and lived with his parents and grandmother Sushila Devi, 92, who suffered from paralysis.

Varun’s father Pramod Kumar, who works in the same company, said that on Sunday night Varun returned home around 8 and after dinner, massaged his legs and also covered him with a blanket when he was going to bed.

“A few hours later, my wife suddenly woke me up saying Varun was vomiting and was extremely sick. When we took him downstairs to the car, one of its tyres was punctured which I suspect was a pre-planned act by Varun. But nevertheless, I drove the car to the Dera Bassi civil hospital from where Varun was referred to GMCH-32,” he told the police.

Varun was declared brought dead by doctors. When the parents returned home in the wee hours of Monday, they saw that Sushila Devi, too, was sick. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Varun left behind a suicide note in which he stated that he had become a drug addict, and could not serve his family well. “I feel suffocated due to the fact that I have not been able to serve you. I had dreamed of working hard and providing a comfortable life to you all, but instead got addicted to drugs and all I could give you was tension,” he said in the note.

He said that he “is taking along grandmother” to serve her in the heaven, and asked his father to forgive him.

The police said that due to his low income and drug habit, Varun was suffering from depression. Varun and Sushila Devi allegedly died due to consumption of celphos pills. Apparently, he gave celphos pills to his grandmother in medicine.
