The wedding procession was ready to roll out for the nuptials of music composer–filmmaker Palaash Muchhal and Indian cricketer Smriti Mandhana. However, the fairy-tale celebration took an unfortunate turn when Smriti’s father fell ill, prompting her to postpone the wedding. Although the postponement has sparked widespread speculation, the primary reason appears to be her father’s health. Here’s everything that has transpired over the past few days.

The Dreamy Proposal (November 21)

After lifting the ODI World Cup, Smriti Mandhana was already on cloud nine. Adding to her joy was boyfriend Palaash Muchhal’s movie-like proposal at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. The couple even shared a video documenting the entire moment. They have reportedly been dating since 2019 but made their relationship public only last year.

Aftermath of the Proposal – (Nov 22)

Palaash Muchhal and Smriti Mandhana started receiving best of wishes from fans, teammates, contemporaries and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM sent a personal note to the couple, congratulating them on the engagement. It read, “It is delightful to learn about the wedding of Smriti and Palaash to be held on 23rd November, 2025. Heartiest congratulations and greetings to the Mandhana and Muchhal families on the auspicious and joyous occasion. Walking hand in hand through every season of life, may the couple find strength in each other’s presence and their hearts, minds and souls be in harmony. May their dreams intertwine and grow together, guiding them toward a future filled with joy and deep understanding.”

The note continued, “May Smriti and Palaash build a shared life rooted in trust, standing by each other always, embracing responsibilities with love and growing together through each other’s strengths and imperfections. As they start a new, beautiful life together, the grace of Smriti’s cover drive meets the lilting musical symphony of Palaash in a wonderful partnership. It is fitting that a Celebration Cricket Match has been scheduled between Team Groom and Team Bride! May both these teams win in the game of life. I send my blessings to the couple for the momentous occasion.”

The families of the two soon flew to Sangli, Smriti’s hometown in Maharashtra, where several functions and the wedding ceremony were to take place. That’s when the clips from the couple’s sangeet and mehendi functions also started making the rounds of social media.

It was attended by several of Smriti Mandhana’s teammates including Radha Yadav, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shreyanka Patil, and Arundhati Reddy. After the haldi ceremony, a friendly cricket match took place between the families of the bride and groom. An usually introverted person, Smriti was seen performing her heart out at the sangeet ceremony. She performed for Palaash solo, before transitioning into a group dance with her family on the song “Desi Girl” from Dostana.

Later she was joined by some of her teammates and Palaash himself, as the couple danced to “Tenu Leke” from the film Salaam-E-Ishq. Fans on the internet swooned over this new and surprising side of Smriti as she lit up the stage with her smile and performance.

Sadly, the couple and their families were not prepared for what was waiting for them just around the corner.

The Day of the Wedding (Nov 23)

Just a few hours before the wedding ceremony, reports surfaced that Smriti Mandhana’s father had taken ill. Her manager, Tuhin Mishra, addressed the media and said that Smriti’s father, Shrinivas Mandhana, felt uneasy during the morning of the wedding. His condition worsened, and in order to ensure his safety, he was admitted to the hospital. “Then we decided not to take any risks. So, we called an ambulance and shifted him to the hospital. He is currently under observation. As Smriti is extremely close to her father, she has decided to indefinitely postpone her wedding until her father’s health returns to normal,” said Tuhin.

The family doctor, Dr Naman Shah, elaborated on the matter and told PTI, “At around 1.30 pm, Mr Srinivas Mandhana got left-sided chest pain; we call it ‘angina’ in medical terms. As the symptoms surfaced, his son called me, we sent an ambulance, and he was shifted to hospital. We found out in the ECG and other reports that cardiac enzymes are elevated; hence, we need to keep him in observation.”

Palaash Muchhal and family fly back to Mumbai (November 24-25)

Soon after the news of the postponement, reports came in that said that Palaash Muchhal’s family had flown back to Mumbai from Sangli, where the wedding was going to take place. This further fuelled speculations about the real reason behind the wedding being postponed. However, Palaash’s mother clarified that the composer had taken ill right after Smriti Mandhana’s father had been hospitalised, and that’s why they had to take him to Mumbai.

His mother told HT that the composer shares an incredibly close bond with Smriti’s father and that he had to be admitted to the hospital because of stress and exhaustion. She said, “He cried so much that his health suddenly deteriorated. They kept him in the hospital for four hours. He was given an IV drip, an ECG was done, and other tests were carried out. Everything came back normal, but he is under a lot of stress.”

Palaash’s sister, singer Palak Muchhal, visited him in the hospital and requested the media to give both the families some privacy during tough times. She wrote in an Instagram note, “Due to Smriti’s father’s health, Smriti and Palash’s wedding has been put on hold. We would request all of you to respect the privacy of the families during this sensitive time.” Smriti also decided to delete all images and videos of the pre-wedding celebrations, while retaining her older images with Palaash.

Reddit has been abuzz with claims that Palaash Muchhal cheated on Smriti Mandhana, and that this is the real reason the wedding was postponed. However, these claims are just speculations and have not been corroborated.

Even before winning the Women’s World Cup, Smriti Mandhana had already been pushing the envelope as one of the most successful Indian women batters of all time. Since 2013, she has played 264 innings across ODI and T20 formats, amassing 9,304 runs.
