A new generation of actors like Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse want to take on Bollywood on their own terms
The jailbirds are on parole. That would be us speaking with reference to the script! In reality, the stars of director Madhur Bhandarkars latest film Jail, actors Neil Nitin Mukesh and Mugdha Godse, were in town courtesy Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Taking technology to the next level,Percept Picture Company (PPC) and Bhandarkar Entertainment in association with BSNL launched a sneak preview of Jail on BSNL Live this Sunday afternoon. The much publicised and awfully ceremonial affair rolled out with BSNL sticking to protocol and refusing to let the stars dish out interviews. Nevertheless, the media stood stubborn and got the team to answer some questions.
The first was shot straight to the charming but shy actor Neil Nitin Mukesh on his nude and controversial scene in the film. Thats a question that I have been put each time I face the press. Controversy and my director Madhur Bhandarkar seem to go hand in hand, quipped the actor as he went on to add,I stripped not to create controversy but because the situation in the script demanded so. Neil made a point and to this his director pitched in support. Its not a sleazy bedroom scene nor is it done to generate publicity. If you see the film, youll realise its just exposing what happens in reality, spoke Bhandarkar. Interestingly, while many young actors in Bollywood would think twice about taking extreme steps,Neil seems the least perturbed. I have been conscious about the kind of cinema I do. This script fit my bill, he says.
That holds true for model turned actor Mugdha Godse who was last seen in Bhandarkars super-hit film Fashion. I am new to Bollywood but at the same time I want to be choosy about the work I do. I am extremely lucky to have a director like Bhandarkar cast me twice, Godse remarked. While Fashion saw her play a glamourous role,in Jail,Mugdha goes totally de-glam. Its a more serious and demanding role and I hope the audience appreciates the hard work we have all put in, the actor remarked.
As far as future projects, this new generation of actors want to take on Bollywood on their own terms. At the end of the day,its the work you do that speaks for you. I have so far done done a few genres but its action that I am really wanting to do next, pitched in Neil. Mugdha agreed: Its not that theres no work in the industry. Its what appeals to you that makes you take the final decision. Its a new breed indeed!
