(Special arrangement)A tragedy was averted on Wednesday after an oil tanker caught fire on a flyover on the National Highway (GT road) in Khanna, Ludhiana district.
The tanker contained both petrol and diesel and thick, black smoke had engulfed the area, police said, adding that there were no casualties as the tanker driver and his colleague jumped out in time.
Police said that traffic on the flyover was stopped immediately and fire tenders from Khanna and nearby towns of Samrala and Mandi Gobindgarh were also called on the spot. The fire was doused in an hour.
Khanna SSP Amneet Kondal said that an NHAI team was also called to inspect the fitness of the flyover. “We will be opening the flyover for traffic only after a go ahead from NHAI,” the SSP said, adding that the vehicle was ferrying fuel from Ludhiana to Mandi Gobindgarh.

“According to the driver, the vehicle hit the divider following which it caught fire,” the SSP said.
Police said that driver Palwinder Singh (58) of Fatehgarh Sahib and his helper Neeraj alias Raju (27) were taken to Khanna Civil Hospital for administering first-aid.
The vehicle owner told police that it was ferrying 6,000 liters of diesel and petrol each.
