The first day of the three-day ENT Surgical Workshop: An Uptake at PGIMER began with lectures on anatomy by the course co-coordinators Prof Daisy Sahni and Dr Sandeep Bansal. The surgical workshop started with cadaveric demonstration by Prof Ashok Gupta which was inaugurated by Prof S B S Mann.
For the first time in the history of the institute,image guided navigation system was also used for cadaveric dissection. Dr Gupta said, Image guided system is the most advanced innovation in the field of endoscopic surgery which provides intra-operative correlation with preoperative radiologic images thereby improving the precision in skull base surgeries.
There were 20 stations for cadaveric dissection with each station handled by a dissector,tutor and consultant. Delegates from India and abroad participated in the hands-on cadaveric dissections. Simultaneously,lectures on various topics pertaining to basic rhinology were given by various experts in the field.
The live surgery session started in the afternoon. Various surgeries like Endoscopic acrocystorhinostomy,powered adenoidectomy ,functional endoscopic sinus surgery and thyroplasty were demonstrated by eminent surgeons.
The event was flagged off by Prof S B S Mann,former head of Otolaryngology,PGIMER. Prof Ashok Kumar Gupta,Head of Department (Unit II),Department of Otolaryngology,PGIMER and the organising chairman of the event spoke about the importance of having a thorough knowledge of basic anatomy along with a proficiency in the latest advancements in the field in order to excel.
Experts also elaborated upon Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy which is an extended application of endoscopic sinus surgery used for treating patient with increased watering from eyes due to a block in the system which drains the tears from the eye to the nose.
