Rajkot: Married woman alleges rape by doctor

The 25-year-old victim took an overdose of some medicines at her residence in Joshipura area of Junagadh and was rushed to Junagadh civil hospital.

A married woman has filed a police complaint accusing an assistant resident medical officer (ARMO) of Junagadh civil hospital of raping her twice after building a rapport with her when she visited the hospital for treatment around two months ago. The civil hospital has removed the ARMO, since.

The matter came to light late Thursday night when the 25-year-old victim took an overdose of some medicines at her residence in Joshipura area of Junagadh and was rushed to Junagadh civil hospital. While undergoing treatment, she lodged a complaint with police alleging that the ARMO, Dr Atul Kubavat of the civil hospital had raped her on January 9 this year at her residence and again at the residence of her maternal aunt.

“The victim says that she was taken to the emergency ward of Junagadh civil hospital some two months ago when she complained of chest pain. Since then, Dr Kubavat developed a rapport with her, took her mobile number and started keeping in touch with her. She claims that the doctor visited her home and sexually assaulted her there. This was followed by a similar assault at her maternal aunt’s residence,” Junagadh taluka police sub-inspector Bhupatsinh Jadeja said on Friday.

Based on the woman’s complaint, Junagadh taluka police booked the doctor for rape late Thursday night.

The PSI said that police conducted searches at the civil hospital and Dr Kubavat’s residence but he was not found at either place. Dr GT Dayalu, medical superintendent of Junagadh civil hospital told The Indian Express: “He is an MBBS and was working as assistant resident medical officer. While we have nothing directly to do with the incident as it is his personal matter and the crime is alleged to have been committed outside of the hospital compound, we have removed him from that the position of Assistant RMO,” Police said that they are trying to trace the victim’s husband to get his statement recorded.
