Hours after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) restricted district central cooperative banks (DCCBs) in Gujarat from exchanging or depositing old denomination Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, representatives of 18 such banks on Monday decided to meet top BJP leadership, including national president Amit Shah.
Chairman of National Federation of State Cooperative Banks Limited Dileep Sanghani said: “Around 50 per cent of bank transactions by people in rural areas take place through district cooperative banks. And if in a such situation, the government bars DCCBs from exchanging money, then rural people are likely to face a lot of problem.”

“We have already submitted a memorandum to both Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Minister of State for Finance Santosh Gangwar. In Delhi, I am going to meet Gangwar tomorrow,” said Sanghani, adding that senior leaders in the co-operative sector of Gujarat such as BJP MP from Porbandar Vitthal Radadiya and chairman of Ahmedabad District Co-operative Bank (ADC) Ajay Patel are working in this regard.
“Tomorrow, Amit Shah is coming to Bharuch for a function of Bharuch District Central Cooperative Bank. Ajay Patel is going there to meet Shah and make a representation,” Sanghani said.-with inputs from Tanvir Siddiqui
