On Saturday, in a veiled attack on Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly at United Nations headquarters in New York, said countries with “regressive thinking” using terrorism as a “political tool” should understand that it is an “equally big threat” for them also. Addressing world leaders at UNGA, PM Modi said, “Today, the world is facing an increased threat of regressive thinking and extremism. In such a situation, the entire world must make science-based, rational and progressive thinking the basis for development. In order to strengthen a science-based approach, India is promoting experience-based learning.” (AP)

Narendra Modi emphasised the need to ensure that Afghanistan’s territory is not used to spread terrorism or for terrorist activities. “On the other hand, countries with regressive thinking that are using terrorism as a political tool must understand that terrorism is an equally big threat for them,” Modi cautioned in an apparent reference to Pakistan which is often accused by its neighbours of providing safe haven to terrorists. Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held the first in-person meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House. (PTI)

During the meeting, both decided to further cement the Indo-US strategic partnership and discussed global issues of common interest, including threats to democracy, Afghanistan and the Indo-Pacific. (PTI)

Kamala Harris had earlier spoken with Modi over the phone in June during the Covid-19 crisis in India. (AP)

The two leaders were wearing masks as they both spoke in front of a battery of pool reporters from both India and the US.
