SP retains both seats

The Samajwadi Party retained both seats in the assembly by-elections,defeating its nearest rival Kalyan Singhs Jankranti Party candidate in Nidhauli Kalan and the Peace Party candidate in Lakhimpur.

The Samajwadi Party retained both seats in the assembly by-elections,defeating its nearest rival Kalyan Singhs Jankranti Party candidate in Nidhauli Kalan and the Peace Party candidate in Lakhimpur.

The results came as a shock for Congress, which failed to save its security deposit in Lakhimpur. In Nidhauli Kalan,it remained on the third position. As the ruling BSP had not fielded its candidate in either constituency, the Congress had expected to put up a good show.

The BSP had skipped the by-polls with the plea that it wanted to use the time for campaigning to strengthen its organisation.

The by-elections were held due to the deaths of two SP MLAs Anil Kumar Singh (Nidhauli Kalan) and Kaushal Kishore (Lakhimpur).
