Saving face

Saturday’s outcome was a face-saver for both the government and Team Anna. After initial flip-flops,the government finally got its act together. Parliament couldn’t have done better than passing a resolution which conveyed the “sense of the House”. It asserted its supremacy in enacting laws. Laws are made neither on the street nor by dictating terms. As Pranab Mukherjee put it,democracy should be differentiated from mobocracy. Now the government has to show its courage by bringing out a strong Lokpal. Team Anna and others should keep in mind that a group of people cannot demand that they frame laws and the legislature accept them.

Ahimsa today

This refers to ‘Anna exists fast lane, risky road ahead’ (IE,August 29). It’s heartening to know that ahimsa can succeed even today. Hazare deserves praise for creating an awareness about citizens’ rights. He has opened a new chapter in Indian history where Parliament has shown its willingness to listen to the people. In our society, obedience, devotion and sacrifice take supremacy over reason. The world has witnessed another Gandhi winning a second freedom for India through non-violence. But there’s no way to get corruption eradicated by just one movement. We need many movements just like Hazare’s.

Team elite

Om Puri’s diatribe is reflective of a typical elitist attitude and it only reveals the underlying theme of Anna Hazare’s arrogant flock — their disgust at having to be part of a democratic process, where “ganwaars” voted in by “ganwaars” are the rulers of the classy and neatly attired. It’s ironic that it’s another adamant “ganwaar” on a hunger strike around whom the Ramlila Maidan congregation gathered. It was the same sentiment that questioned universal franchise in a nation of rampant illiteracy. Those questions have been answered resoundingly and India’s success as a democracy has only been possible due to the massive participation of our so-called lower classes who have shown remarkable acumen in using the vote.

Constant change

several politicians, columnists, parliamentarians, etc felt irritated as they came to know that the people call Anna Hazare today’s Gandhi. Some people, however intelligent and powerful, forget the universal truth that “change is inevitable”. This great nation is entering a new phase of history. People’s awareness has been rising and they demand their legitimate rights. Hereafter, every elected MP or MLA should remember that s/he is accountable to the “people of India”. It isn’t an intelligence secret that our democratic institutions have been eaten up from within. Every reform for the betterment of our future should always be welcome.
