Rape victim frightened as ever of unrepentant father

The rapist and his accomplice wife are remorseless; their daughters one a victim of rape and the other of sexual abuse are in a trauma they cannot shake off,the Mira Road police say.

The father,a 60-year-old businessman,is charged with raping his elder daughter after being encouraged to do so by a tantrik,involved in an illicit affair with his wife,who allowed the rape to go on for nine years.

The tantrik told them this would bring them prosperity, said senior police inspector Mukund Mahajan.

Subdivisional police officer Maithili Jha,who questioned the couple and their daughters,described the contrasting emotions. When I questioned the parents,they seemed remorseless. They described their actions candidly, Jha said.

On the other hand,the elder daughter was terrified of her father,even after his arrest. While I was questioning her,she kept begging me not to bring him into the room. However,she said her mother could not be blamed for not protesting against the father.

Jha said the younger daughter,aged 15,had been subjected to abuse three months ago. She is as scared of her father as her sister is.

Jha said the father is short tempered and repeatedly threatened the elder daughter. He would threaten her that if she spoke to anyone of their sexual activities,it would bring the family a bad name.

This kept the girl,now 21,silent for nine years. She sometimes contemplated suicide and running away but never could,because of her fathers influence.

It was only when she got to know that her younger sister was turning a victim that she spoke out, Jha said.
