The police on Saturday broke the indefinite fast undertaken by nine students of Kakatiya University,in the campus,sparking widespread protests in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh. All the fasting students were admitted to the MGM Hospital on directions of a local court,where they were produced after they were picked from the campus in the morning,Shahnawaz Qasim,District Superintendent of Police,said.
Angered over the police action,which descended in large number on the campus,agitating students staged a road blockade,the police said.
Thousands of students took out rallies in Warangal city and marched towards the varsity campus to express their solidarity to their fasting fellows. The police have registered suicide attempt case against eight students as they refused to undergo medical treatment.
Meanwhile,the University Employees Association along with the Joint Action Committee of Students (JAC) launched a relay hunger strike on Saturday to press their demands on Telangana issue.
The JAC had called for a bandh of educational institutions on Saturday demanding immediate release of students,arrested during the Telangana agitation.
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Saturday came under attack from the Telugu Desam (TDP) and Praja Rajyam (PRP) parties,which said he was adding fuel to fire over the contentious Telangana issue. Chidambaram also became the target of attack by the BJP,with the party alleging that his statements on the separate statehood demand were only compounding the confusion.
