PAU turns into fortress

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s brief halt to the city marked the end of canvassing in the last phase of the polls.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s brief halt to the city marked the end of canvassing in the last phase of the polls. The Punjab Agricultural University turned into a fortress where the chopper of the PM was scheduled to land.

Of the five choppers that landed on the university grounds, three belonged to the PM and his securitymen while the remaining two were that of the Chief Minister and his son.

Amid all this, the students and the staff of the university were in for a surprise when instead of entering the university through gate number two, they were asked to enter the university through another gate.

“I was surprised to see huge posse of police officers on the campus. There were more policemen on the campus than the students. It was slightly unnerving to see so many cops.” But the PM definitely disappointed the students, who wanted to catch a glimpse of the Congress veteran. “We get to see the PM only on television. Owing to tight security,we could not see him in person,” said Sharanjit Singh.

Another student Kamlaldeep Kaur, added,“It is during elections that we see so much activity. I wish the PAU officials had tried to seek sometime with the PM so as to apprise him of the problems being faced by the university.”
