Only a few potholes remain to be filled: BMC

While Mumbaikars may be having a tough time negotiating potholes on roads,Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar on Tuesday said there are only a few potholes remaining to be filled in the city.

However, data from the Roads Department say the number of pothole locations have gone up from about 68 last week to 308 on Tuesday following three days of heavy downpour.

Kumar said the pothole-filling work would be carried out round-the-clock and all the remaining locations would be attended to within 48 hours. He said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) would try to fill these potholes with cold mix instead of the conventional hot mix that wears off during monsoon. However,he was quick to add the deadline to complete the task depends on the monsoon.

“We are expecting a dry spell from Tuesday. If it persists, the task will be completed in time,” he added.

According to the recent civic estimates, the city has around 308 pothole locations—118 in city,147 in western suburbs and 43 in eastern suburbs. BMC is focusing on about 72 roads that mostly fall under the Ganesha route.

“The work was largely completed before the recent rain spell. Only minor locations remained. But because of the rains, the material used for pothole filling washed away,” said Satish Badve, chief engineer,Roads Department “Cold mix is most suitable during wet spell. Even if it rains heavily, the filling will last throughout the festive season,” Kumar added.
