The statement on the strength of the US economy came from the Indian prime minister — an eminent economist and a leading statesman (‘A dollar trip’,IE,November 25). He also observed that democratic political vehicles are built more robustly,to ferry economies to their destination without damage, better than totalitarian political dispensations. With the US economy temporarily stuck in a slush of its own making, the inspired thinking of some even had the Chinese currency taking over as a universal reserve. China’s desire to garner larger shares of world export,by resisting revaluation of the renminbi will, sooner than later, inflict on its system explosive pressure to keep pace with manufacture and the volume of exports will balloon beyond proportion. This will be exacerbated by its command politics. Such a politico-economic system cannot sustain the standards required of a stable world currency.

This refers to ‘Needed: Photos of Sonia,PM every 25 km of national highway’ (IE,November 26). While travelling along potholed UP roads last year one noticed Chief Minister Mayawati’s pictures on big billboards at regular intervals. Being familiar with her obsessive self-glorification at the expense of public funds, one was not terribly surprised. But it’s difficult to believe that a low-profile leader, supposedly of high principles, will approve of his photos being displayed on national highways “every 25 km” as part of the National Highway Authority of India’s plan.

It is the US that needs to convince India that it is sensitive to the latter’s legitimate political interests in the region (‘Between friends’,IE,November 26). So far,India has played along with the US despite Pakistan’s continuing duplicitous behaviour. To begin with, the US must prevent Pakistan from supporting terrorist activities in India and recognise India’s role in

promoting stability in Afghanistan. Anyhow, both countries need to be pragmatic and respect each other’s priorities and compulsions.

Get them

This refers to the editorial ‘After Nalbari’ (IE,November 24). The twin blasts took place in a very short span of time in front of a police station. Now a fear psychosis has affected the people of Nalbari. You’ve rightly said that the government should “configure strategy to go that last, long mile against ULFA”. It should come forward to destroy militant organisations in Assam and the Northeast. It’ll be a big help if we capture the dreaded ULFA leader Paresh Baruah. But the government must also trace the whereabouts of Arabinda Rajkhowa, believed to be still in Bangladesh. Only then, can Assam’s gory drama be over.
